When is my MOT due? Dates, early testing and fines

In England, Scotland and Wales a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, then every year after that.
Test early without losing days
You can have an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current certificate runs out and keep the same renewal date. Our vehicle check shows the exact earliest date for your car.
Driving without an MOT
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. The only exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repairs required to pass. Your insurance may also be invalid.
Imported cars
Cars imported from Japan and elsewhere follow the same rules once registered in the UK, based on the date of first registration. Our vehicle check reads the official DVSA date for you.
